Durban Folk Club News

AGM and concert feedback
The concert was well supported and enjoyed by all. Thanks to everyone who contributed their time and music to the occasion.

The AGM on the 3rd March fielded a committee for the coming year with a couple of new members, and a couple of last year's (Sue and Fiona) stepping down. The plan for the coming year is to hold a few "big" events, like the birthday concert, at intervals to be decided by the new committee.

21st Birthday Celebration Concert
The concert will be held at the University of KZN Jazz Centre on Saturday 17th February, starting at 5pm. The line-up includes :
Celtis; Miriam Erasmus; Syd Kitchen; Mike Raftery; Odyssey;
Guy Buttery; Roly Struckmeyer; Cross Purposes; Richard Haslop

AGM March 3rd 2007
The AGM of the Durban Folk Club will be held at 26 Levenhall Road at 6pm on March 3rd.

White Mountain Folk Festival 22-25 September
The White Mountain folk Festival took place at the White Mountain Resort, near Estcourt, over the long weekend. The music line-up was a treat for acoustic music lovers, in a beautiful and mellow country setting. The date has already been set for next year - don't miss it. Photos of the event will be up soon on the website www.whitemountain.co.za.

 Mim Erasmus
Our very own "Mim" Erasmus is helping to put DFC on the map overseas.
Miriam Backhouse, as she is known to the world of Folk Music, has been singing in various types of UK venues from Folk Clubs to Arts Centres and Festivals, over the last few years, slowly building up interest for a Festival tour in 2006.
Later on this year, she will be listed with iconic music and media info@iconicmusic.com the same 'stable' as Ralph McTell and Jaqui McShee's Pentangle.
This July she recorded a new CD of English Traditional Songs with her old UK record company Mother Earth, and, together with the re-release of "Gypsy without a Road" [ the original vinyl now mega rare and fetching up to 100 pounds to collectors ] will be set for a huge career boost.
Her South African songs are being played on BBC radio stations, particularly "Don't let it happen to my child " as part of the Make Poverty History campaign, which she joined whilst there.
So, along with Syd Kitchen and the other guys, we're not doing too bad.....go girl !!
